AT A CHRIS JAGGER CONCERT

Posted by Robert Reid

Little London (Mono Dub 2004) NEW YORK, 1995 -- Everyone crowded the now-closed Bottom Line downtown to see if Mick Jagger would show up, maybe sing a song or two. His brother Chris Jagger was playing, to push sales of his fourth record in 21 years ('Atcha! Rock the Zydeco') with his rather Dave Davies-by-way-of-the-bayou demeanor. His songs--the only known combo of 'free Tibet' politics and zydeco music in the free world. Mick did show up. I was drinking a beer at the bar, tended by PFSH contributor Chip Dalby, when Mick walked in. He glanced at me and I looked away. Mick didn't play. The closest to the action he got was when Chris Jagger, with Tibetan fur hat on, stood on his table and danced, to the hand-clapping delight of Mick and Jerry Hall. Shortly before the set ended, Mick jumped up to leave and Rolling Stone photographers and various fans, rushed him to get a close-up photo. The guy who had been sitting next to me at the bar--moustached, possibly from Queens, carrying a full Tower Records bag of recent purchases (I believe he mentioned getting a 'fresh copy' of a Van Morrison record)--ran to the door. Just before it closed, Tower-Bag-Guy yelled out 'Mick, Mick... I just want to thank you!' The door shut.
